Cakesicles? My mind has officially been blown

Can I just get a full sheet of brownies or a whole cake?  I’d rather just engorge myself that way than deal with these prissy popsicles.

Mailbag Time

topherchris:

How do you afford your six bajillion domain names? I like to make websites and fun shit too, but I never promote any of them because I’m too poor to afford a unique name for each of them.

Internetly yours,
Mike

Greetings Mike! This is a great question, and is fairly common. I hope you don’t mind me answering here.

So, how do I afford six bajillion domains? Well, it’s tricky. I once promised myself I’d never explain the secret, but something just feels right about coming clean.

The first concept it helps to understand is a little bit technical. It’s something called “debt.” Debt, as defined by the most recent Random House Dictionary is something that is owed or that one is bound to pay to or perform for another. Stay with me here.

Let’s say I want to buy six domain names. At $9.95 per year, that’d be an initial cost of $59.70. Let’s also assume (purely for the sake of argument) that I have less than $20 available in my checking account after bills/mortgage/etc payments would all clear my account.

Here’s where it gets complicated. At this point, I go ahead and purchase those domains normally. They go through, because my big bills haven’t hit yet. I’m now the proud owner of six new domains. Of course, this means that my utility bill payment check will bounce and my water will be turned off, but that’s a little beyond the scope of this discussion.

I hope this helps. For more documentation on how to register domains and set up DNS and A-records properly, check out the Wikipedia page on Debt.

Thanks!
